Heat production in municipal and industrial waste as revealed by isothermal microcalorimetry

چکیده

Abstract Self-ignited fires at municipal solid waste (MSW) storage sites are relatively common. The minimization of the phenomenon self-heating in can reduce risks for smouldering combustion. purpose this work was to develop a method that be used measure and characterize heat production MSW. is based on isothermal conduction microcalorimetry (IMC). MSW determined sampling from two different geographical locations Sweden. Both original milled/homogenised were tested. measured temperatures together with gas analysis using micro-gas chromatography. activity waste, terms its flow, increased when temperature up 60 °C decreased higher temperatures, e.g., 70 80 °C. consumption oxygen carbon dioxide, production, indicated aerobic metabolism responsible production. This further strengthened by marginal observed ultraviolet treated waste. results showed IMC valuable tool characterising industrial

Standards in Isothermal Microcalorimetry

The main calorimetric principles used in isothermal microcalorimetry are briefly discussed. Different chemical calibration and test reactions are discussed, with a focus on reactions suitable for ambient conditions: reactions initiated by mixing of liquids (including titration microcalorimetry), dissolution of solid compounds and of slightly soluble gases, a photochemical process, and thermal p...

Isothermal microcalorimetry in applied biology

Techniques of isothermal microcalorimetry have been much improved during the past two decades. In addition to their use in fundamental research, applications of practical importance have been established in some areas. However, no significant use of isothermal microcalorimetry has yet been seen in practical applications of biology, despite many methodological studies reported from that area. Th...

Heat Generation in Municipal Solid Waste Landfills

This study was conducted to investigate thermal aspects of municipal solid waste landfills as a function of operational conditions and climatic region. Spatial and temporal distributions of waste temperatures were determined at four landfills located in North America Michigan, New Mexico, Alaska, and British Columbia. Temperatures of wastes at shallow depths extending to 6 to 8 m depth and ...

Methane Production from Municipal Solid Waste

Introduction Archaeological investigations of landfills have revealed that biodegradable wastes can be found — virtually intact — 25 years after burial. We know that landfills contain bacteria with the metabolic capability to degrade many of the materials that are common components of municipal refuse. The persistence for decades of degradable materials in the presence of such organisms appears...

Isolation and Characterization of Bacteria Isolated from Municipal Solid Waste for Production of Industrial Enzymes and Waste Degradation

Waste generation and its control have taken an important role in our environment. With the doubling of population and changing lifestyle pattern of the inhabitants the quantity of municipal waste generated is increasing in an alarming rate. Most of this waste is subjected to dumping in a specified disposal yard. The greatest challenge to the environmentalists is the eco friendly management of t...
